It was fate and a mutual friend that brought Kayla Roering and Drew Huls together at a party in 2013. Drew was unable to take his eyes off Kayla from the first moment he saw her. Despite having many mutual friends in common, Drew remembers thinking, “How have I not met this woman before?” It was “butterflies galore” for both Kayla and Drew as they talked until four in the morning and developed a deep friendship that quickly progressed to something more.
Just weeks after the couple met, Drew was in a snowmobile accident that caused severe damage to his face. Though the two had only been on a few dates so far, Kayla rushed to Drew’s side, even skipping school to take care of him. Her loving care and devotion made Drew positive that Kayla was the woman he wanted to spend his life with.
Kayla and Drew often enjoyed taking trips and sharing adventures with one another, and it was on an excursion to Duluth, Minnesota, that Drew saw his chance to propose. Unbeknown to him, Kayla had her hopes up that this might be the weekend he popped the question! The couple was on top of Gooseberry Falls when Drew began rummaging in his pocket and pulled out . . . his phone to take a picture. Kayla tried not to be disappointed as they continued exploring the falls.
As Kayla tried to focus on enjoying the scenery, Drew pointed out a large rock in the middle of the river. The two sat side by side on the rock, with Drew reminiscing about their time together and sharing his feelings for Kayla as the woman of his dreams. He topped off the sweet moment by revealing the ring and saying, “Look at this rock I got you!” Kayla was surprised after all!
They immediately began planning their wedding day, filling it with personal details to make the day even more unique and cherished. Drew began restoring his ’65 Mustang for the couple to ride off in after the
ceremony, even going so far as to buy an actual NASCAR for its frame. They also carefully selected the ceremony location so that they would be able to visit the grave of Drew’s father, Herbert Huls, to honor him and pay their respects before the reception.
Kayla was stunning in her gown when Drew finally got to see his bride on their wedding day, October 21, 2017. The autumn air was chilly, but the bride and groom were fighting nervousness as Kayla paused to hug her parents before walking down the aisle. Then she saw Drew waiting for her at the altar and “everything else just went away. It was just he and I.”
Guests looked on as the bride made her way down the rustic aisle of the barn at Boomerville Lodge in Cold Spring, Minnesota. Kayla was resplendent in the mermaid-style gown. The chiffon train trailed regally behind her as she eagerly approached her beloved and the two committed to living their lives as one. Following the ceremony, the bride and groom visited the grave of Drew’s father, who passed when Drew was seven years old. “It was important to us that we got pictures with him since he couldn’t physically be there.” Though there had been no rain earlier in the day, drops began showering down when the couple reached the gravesite to visit and celebrate with Drew’s father in a touching moment that will be cherished forever. “I truly believe it was Drew’s dad looking down on us,” Kayla says. The new Mr. and Mrs. Huls shared their first dance to George Strait’s “True,” swaying around the dance floor and reflecting on both their love for one another and the joyous day they had just experienced. “It was so much fun marrying my best friend!”
Kayla Jean Roering is the daughter of John and Nancy Roering of Albany, Minnesota. Drew Joseph Huls is the son of Deborah Huls and Steven Traut and the late Herbert Huls of St. Joseph, Minnesota.

The first time Chris Janssen and Allie Batcher met, they knew something was cooking—in more ways than one. Not only was it Chris’ first day as a cook at the Arrowwood Resort Deck Bar & Grill in Alexandria, Minnesota, it was also love at first sight. Allie, now employed as an HR Specialist at American Solutions for Business, was still in college, and Chris was just beginning his elementary physical education teaching career at District 206 schools. They worked together all summer at the Deck Bar after that instant connection where Allie was a server and Chris continued his job as a cook. The couple grew to appreciate each other’s sense of humor and bonded over their mutual love of “The Office” television show. Naturally, Allie and Chris began dating and their love story began to unfold.
Chris knew in his heart that Allie was the woman he wanted to spend his forever with and he began planning the perfect proposal at no other place than where their love story began, Arrowwood Resort Deck Bar & Grill. He waited for a night when there was live entertainment scheduled and during the performers’ break, Chris walked on stage and grabbed the microphone. Inviting Allie onto the stage with him, Chris got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. All the butterflies and nervousness Chris had experienced hoping to get his words right had been worth it—Allie accepted. “I was caught so off guard in the most wonderful way,” Allie remembers. “Once Chris called me up in front of everyone, I immediately started crying tears of joy.”
Allie immediately started dreaming of her wedding day, too. She had always wanted to get married at Carlos Creek Winery near Alexandria, and Chris agreed that the winery would be a beautiful location for their celebration. It was important to the couple that the rest of their vendors were local as well, so they hired the Alexandria area’s very
best. From the exquisite flowers from Downtown Floral to the delicious food catered by The Depot, to the excellent photography by Amy Ekren Photography. Eventually, the details took shape and Allie and Chris’s wedding day had quickly approached.
That July 21st, 2017 had begun as a beautiful day, promising to be sunny and warm. When Allie had finally dressed for the celebration, she eagerly went to greet her groom for their first look. Before Chris could turn around to see his beautiful bride, Allie had wrapped her arms around him and gave him a big hug. “We both felt such overwhelming joy, it was such a special moment of our day.”
After the couple’s five groomsmen, five bridesmaids, flower girl, and ring bear processed down the aisle in the outdoor surroundings of the vineyard, Allie proceeded behind them to Shania Twain’s “From This Moment On”—the song she’d dreamed of having played at her wedding since she was a little girl. The ceremony was beautifully decorated and the couple honored the memory of those who couldn’t be there to celebrate with them by lighting a special lantern. Following the vows and the exchange of rings, Chris and Allie sweetly sealed their promise to one another with a kiss.
The reception continued at the Carlos Creek Winery and after guests had enjoyed the fabulous dinner followed by delicious gourmet cupcakes from Cold Spring Bakery, it was time to celebrate. Guest also were entertained at the reception by singing karaoke songs and dancin making for a memorable night. “Our whole day was a fairy tale.”
Allie McKenzie Batcher is the daughter of Sharon and Tom Batcher of Alexandria, Minnesota. Chris Michael Janssen is the son of Renae Janssen of Fairmont, Minnesota. The newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon to Negril, Jamaica following the events of the wedding.
